Weighing just 10 grams, the DJI Mic Mini is the company’s response to the Hollyland Lark. Is it worth your attention?

The Good

The DJI Mic Mini packs an impressive set of features for such a tiny package:

  • 2-Step Noise Reduction: The built-in noise reduction system performs admirably, minimizing background interference effectively.
  • Automatic Clipping Prevention: Prevents sound distortion, ensuring your audio remains clear.
  • OsmoAudio Ecosystem Integration: Seamless compatibility with DJI’s Action 4, Action 5, and Pocket 3 cameras.
  • Thoughtful Design: The TRS wire can be neatly stored in the charging case, OR have the deadcat still attached on the mic when stored.
  • Affordability: It’s priced competitively, making it accessible for budget-conscious creators.

The Not-So-Good

However, it falls short in some key areas:

  • No Lavalier Mic Compatibility: A downside for creators who prefer discreet audio setups. BUT, seeing as it’s made to be as compact as possible, and with the Mic 2 around, this is really working as designed.
  • Lacks Internal Recording: Unlike Mic 2, the Mic Mini offers no onboard recording feature, along with 32-bit float audio capture.
  • No Sony Adapter Support: Creators using Sony cameras will need to rely on a TRS cable, which may feel outdated.

Usage and Verdict

The DJI Mic Mini’s featherlight design makes it almost forgettable during use – in a good way. But its compact size can also be a liability, as you might misplace it if not kept in its case.

As a competitor to the Hollyland Lark, it holds its own, particularly for creators in the DJI ecosystem. However, the lack of broader compatibility, especially with Sony cameras, limits its appeal. For users of the DJI Action 4, Action 5, or Pocket 3, it’s an excellent choice. For others, the TRS cable workaround might feel like a step back in time.

Final Thoughts

The DJI Mic Mini is a compact and affordable option tailored to the DJI ecosystem. While it excels in portability and ease of use, its limitations may deter non-DJI users, but at its price, it’s insanely hard to not buy a set.
